TOEIC vs TOEFL vs IELTS: which English test should you take in 2026?

Updated on July 15, 2026

Choose the TOEIC if you need an English certificate for a French engineering degree, a CV or an employer: €179 in France (€159 via digiSchool), and 785 points validate the CTI's B2 requirement. Choose the TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic only for university admission abroad. All three scores expire after 2 years.

What is each test actually designed for?

The three certifications are not interchangeable: each was built for a different gatekeeper.

  • TOEIC Listening & Reading (ETS Global) measures workplace English through 200 multiple-choice questions. It is the de facto standard in France: the CTI (Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur) requires level B2 to award the engineering degree, and 785 points is the recognized threshold. The national average was 705 in 2022, so a job posting asking for “800+” is asking for above-average English.
  • TOEFL iBT (also run by ETS) measures academic English: lectures, campus conversations, integrated essays. Its single purpose is university admission, primarily in the United States and Canada.
  • IELTS (British Council, IDP, Cambridge) comes in two versions: Academic for universities in the UK, Australia and beyond, and General Training for immigration files (Canada, Australia, New Zealand).

First filter: if no foreign university or visa is involved, the TOEIC wins by default. It is the test French recruiters and schools actually name, it is the cheapest of the three, and it is the only one you can improve substantially through test technique alone.

How do the formats and durations compare?

TOEIC L&R TOEFL iBT IELTS
Skills tested Listening + Reading 4 skills 4 skills
Structure 200 questions (100 Listening + 100 Reading) Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing tasks 4 timed papers incl. face-to-face interview
Duration ~2 h (Listening ≈ 45 min, Reading 75 min) ~2 h ~2 h 45
Score scale 10–990 (5–495 per section) 0–120 Bands 1–9
Question type 100% multiple choice, no penalty for guessing MCQ + productive tasks Mixed formats + live speaking
Format stability Unchanged since June 2018 Shortened in 2023 Stable

Two structural consequences follow:

  1. The TOEIC L&R contains zero productive tasks. No essay, no recorded monologue: elimination strategies, timing drills and systematic guessing (never penalized) convert directly into points. That is not true of TOEFL Writing or the IELTS live interview, which require weeks of production practice with feedback.
  2. If you need speaking and writing certified, ETS sells the TOEIC 4-Skills — but that test changes on 3 August 2026, while the Listening & Reading format does not move. Details in our guide to the 2026 TOEIC changes.

How much does each test cost in France in 2026?

Test 2026 price in France Reductions
TOEIC Listening & Reading (public session) €179 −€17 for students, job seekers and military (€162); €159 via the digiSchool partnership
TOEIC 4-Skills €216 CPF-eligible inside a training course
TOEFL iBT ≈ €260
IELTS (Academic or General) ≈ €260

The TOEIC digital score report is free; the paper certificate with photo costs €16 extra. Line-by-line breakdown in our TOEIC price guide.

Funding changes the math. Since 2 April 2026, every CPF-funded training carries a mandatory €150 out-of-pocket co-payment (waived for job seekers, or when the employer tops up the account). And only the TOEIC 4-Skills packaged inside a training course is CPF-eligible — the L&R exam alone is not. Full rules in TOEIC and CPF. Net result: paying €159–179 directly for the L&R is often cheaper than a CPF package once the €150 co-payment is factored in.

How long is each score valid, and who recognizes what?

All three scores expire after 2 years — count backwards from your application deadline, not forwards from today.

  • TOEIC: French companies, engineering schools (CTI threshold 785; selective schools ask 800–870) and business schools.
  • TOEFL iBT: universities across North America and most English-taught programs worldwide.
  • IELTS: UK and Australian universities, plus the immigration authorities of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

ETS also prints a proficiency label on every TOEIC certificate — recruiters often read the label faster than the raw number:

TOEIC total ETS proficiency level
905–990 International Professional Proficiency
785–900 Working Proficiency Plus
605–780 Limited Working Proficiency
405–600 Elementary Proficiency Plus
255–400 Elementary Proficiency
10–250 Basic Proficiency

Which score equals B2 or C1 on each test?

CEFR level TOEIC total (10–990) TOEFL iBT (0–120) IELTS (1–9)
B1 550+ 42–71 4.0–5.0
B2 785+ 72–94 5.5–6.5
C1 945+ 95–113 7.0–8.0
C2 not certified 114+ 8.5+

Two TOEIC-specific caveats. First, the TOEIC does not certify C2 — even 990 maps to C1. Second, ETS sets section minima behind the conventional totals: Listening 400 and Reading 385 for B2, Listening 490 and Reading 455 for C1. A lopsided 790 (say 460 in Listening and 330 in Reading) can therefore miss the B2 certification despite clearing 785 overall. Check any score combination in the interactive conversion table.

Which test is fastest to prepare?

The TOEIC — for three structural reasons:

  1. Every question is multiple choice and guessing is free. With no penalty for wrong answers, a disciplined eliminate-then-guess routine guarantees you answer all 200 questions and lose nothing on the ones you did not know. On the TOEFL or IELTS, a weak essay or a hesitant interview scores low with no comparable recovery mechanism.
  2. Only receptive skills are tested. Listening and reading progress through input and timed drills you can run alone; TOEFL Writing and the IELTS interview require a human corrector and scheduled speaking practice, which stretches preparation time and budget.
  3. The format is frozen. Unchanged since June 2018, so every official-style practice test matches exactly what you will sit — no preparation wasted on retired formats. The TOEFL was reworked in 2023, and the TOEIC 4-Skills changes again on 3 August 2026; the L&R stands still.

Realistic sequencing: measure your level first, target the section minimum you are missing (Reading 385 or Listening 400 for B2), and only book the €179 session once your practice scores clear the bar — the 2-year validity clock starts at the real test, not at your first mock.

TOEIC or TOEFL or IELTS: the decision tree

Answer in order; stop at the first “yes”.

  1. University in the US or Canada?TOEFL iBT. It is the admissions standard there and its academic tasks mirror what you will do on campus.
  2. University in the UK or Australia, or an immigration file?IELTS (Academic for study, General Training for visas).
  3. French engineering degree to validate?TOEIC L&R, minimum 785, and 800–870 for the most selective schools. See what the 785 threshold really requires.
  4. CV, promotion or employer requirement in France?TOEIC L&R at €179 (or €159 via digiSchool). Target at least the 705 national average; 785+ puts you in the “Working Proficiency Plus” band recruiters recognize.
  5. Certified speaking and writing needed?TOEIC 4-Skills (€216) if the requester names the TOEIC specifically — remembering it changes on 3 August 2026 — otherwise IELTS.

Logistics if the TOEIC wins: public sessions run mostly on Saturday mornings, registration is online on etsglobal.org up to about 10 days before the date, and the remote-proctored version (ProctorExam) is reserved for partner institutions — individuals must sit in a test center.

Put it into practice

Whatever the deadline, start by measuring: take a free full-length TOEIC practice test — 200 questions, real timing, and an estimated score on the 10–990 scale. If your mock result already clears 785, book a session before your application window closes; if not, the section report tells you whether Listening (100 questions, ~45 minutes) or Reading (100 questions, 75 minutes) needs the work first.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TOEIC easier than the TOEFL?

Not easier, but faster to prepare. The TOEIC Listening & Reading is 100% multiple choice with no speaking or writing and no penalty for guessing, so timing and elimination technique convert directly into points. The TOEFL iBT adds essays and recorded speaking, which require weeks of production practice with feedback.

Can I pay for the TOEIC with my CPF in 2026?

Only the TOEIC 4-Skills packaged inside a training course is CPF-eligible, and since 2 April 2026 every CPF-funded training carries a mandatory 150 EUR co-payment, waived for job seekers or when the employer tops up. The Listening & Reading test alone is not eligible: you pay 179 EUR directly, or 159 EUR via digiSchool.

What TOEIC score do French engineering schools require?

The CTI requires level B2, certified by 785 points on the TOEIC. Selective schools raise the bar to 800-870. The score is valid 2 years, so time your session to still cover your graduation date.

How long are TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS scores valid?

Two years for all three tests. Institutions check the test date, so plan the session backwards from your application deadline rather than taking the test early and letting the score expire.

Can I take the TOEIC online from home?

Not as an individual. The remote-proctored version (ProctorExam) is reserved for partner institutions. Individuals register for public test-center sessions, held mostly on Saturday mornings, on etsglobal.org up to about 10 days before the test date.
